The Organizing Committee together with the IPA, the Palaeontological Association and other local and foreign institutions will provide financial assistance to PhD students presenting their palaeontological results at the IPC4.

The Palaeontological Association

The Palaeontological Association will be making available funds to support intercontinental travel costs of postgraduate student members of the Association who will be presenting their research at the 4th International Palaeontological Congress. Each successful applicant will be awarded a maximum of £750, and it is anticipated that up to 20 awards will be made. Preference will be given to those student members of the Association who joined before August 2013. Applications will be made through an online form on the Association’s website, which will open following the abstract submission deadline. IPA and IPC Grants for Lodging and Food

Congratulations to all IPA and IPC grant-winning students! Check the list to see who the awarded are.

CANDIDATE PROFILE: The grants are open to all PhD students and junior postdoctoral researchers, with no more than 2 years postdoctoral experience. In both cases, candidates can be of any nationality. Applicants must be registered to the Congress at the moment of submission.

ELIGIBILITY
Abstracts should be relevant to any palaeontological topic, preferably containing descriptions of new methods, and/or addressing significant results for the understanding and interpretation of a scientific question.
The abstract should be original. Previously published contributions cannot be submitted.
Applicants must be the first authors and presenters.

INSTRUCTIONS
Applicants should submit the abstract and a CV (maximum 1 A4 page) with their research background. In the case of PhD students, the CV should include information about students’ current degree program, dates of registration as doctoral students, estimated date of completion and institution. In the case of applicants within two years of postdoc experience at the time of the deadline for abstract submission, the CV should include information about the date of the PhD dissertation, current position, and institution.
Abstracts submitted by the applicants must follow all formatting specifications as set in the IPC4 Abstract page and should clearly state the questions addressed, the significance of the research, the methods used, and the results and implications or conclusions.
Selection of grant winners will be undertaken by the abstract selection committee.
Only one abstract per candidate will be considered for this grant application.

DEADLINE: All applications must be submitted before April 30, 2014. No application will be accepted after this deadline.

GRANT DETAILS
IPA and IPC will provide 20 grants that will cover the accommodation in double rooms for 5 nights in the Puerta del Sol Hotel (Accommodation page) located near the Congress venue (Show Map); plus lunch vouchers for the sessions days.
Applicants will be informed of the abstract selection committee’s decision approximately within two months from the deadline for abstract submission.

IFPS Funding for Attendance

The International Federation of Palynological Societies (IFPS) has agreed to support student participation at the upcoming 4th International Palaeontological Congress. $4000 US Dollars has been set aside from IFPS funds to be awarded to students (M.Sc. or PhD) presenting palynological results (talk or poster). Each student will be awarded $500.00 to be presented at the conference. Students wishing to apply should email a covering letter (no more than one page of A4) along with their talk/poster abstract to Jim Riding (IFPS Secretary-Treasurer). The covering letter should briefly explain which IFPS affiliated society the student is a member of and the nature of their palynological contribution to the meeting. Applications for IFPS support should arrive before April 1, 2014.

The IFPS will be advertising this shortly in its newsletter PALYNOS.

IAS Travel Grants

We are happy to announce the grantees of the IAS travel grant. We would also like to congratulate all participants and thank the IAS for its support.

The International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) has decided to allocate travel grants for IAS student members attending the IPC4. In order to apply, students must present an active contribution (oral or poster) at the Congress on a topic with sedimentological relevance. The application will be done through the IAS website; it requires a short letter of motivation and the deadline is August 1, 2014.

AASP Student Travel Grants

The Palynological Society (AASP) will support travel for students presenting at the Annual Meeting at the IPC4 in Mendoza.

Procedure for Travel Grant Application: Amount of travel award is variable based on need. The committee will award four to six travel grants between $1000 and $1500 each.

The application should include the following:

1) one paragraph justification for the request plus a description of the research to be presented (or the abstract submitted for the presentation, if available);
2) outline of the requested amount and how the funds would be used;
3) applicant’s email and postal addresses;
4) all of these to be forwarded by the applicant’s advisor who includes a brief explanation of how attendance at the Annual Meeting will benefit the student.

Travel Grant Applications are due on February 28, 2014.

APA Financial Aid Awards

The Asociación Paleontológica Argentina (APA) is offering 3 (three) financial aid awards, of $1500 (Argentine Pesos) each, to attend the 4th International Palaeontological Congress. These grants are available to graduate students currently working on their PhD thesis who are active members of the APA and plan to submit at least one abstract as first author to the Congress. Applicants should send their CV, abstract presented at the IPC4 and the plan and progress of their doctoral thesis before April 30, 2014. Applicants must have the membership fees up to date. Submissions must be sent by email to the APA (secretaria@apaleontologica.org.ar).

STEPPE Student Travel Awards

The STEPPE office, in collaboration with the Geological Society of America (GSA), the Paleobotanical Section of the Botanical Society of America, the Paleontological Society (PS), the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), and the Society for Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) are pleased to offer funding for undergraduate and graduate students to travel to Mendoza, Argentina to attend the 4th International Palaeontological Congress (IPC4). A committee comprised of representatives from the collaborating societies will read and evaluate student applications. Applications will be evaluated based on the quality of written abstracts and will be granted to those who have compelling reasons to attend.

ELIGIBILITY
Students must be current members of one of the five collaborating societies (SEPM, PS, SVP, GSA or the Paleobotanical section of the BSA) and must be presenting research at the 4th IPC to be eligible to apply.

To apply, students will need to submit the following:

1) Abstract of research to be presented at the meeting (including all co-authors and affiliations). The abstract submitted for funding consideration should be the same abstract as submitted to the 4th IPC.
2) A statement (no more than one page) that includes your current position (e.g., PhD student), institutional affiliation, date of M.S. or PhD (received or anticipated), society affiliation(s), a list of other sources of funding that are available, and a short explanation of why (professional, financial need, fieldwork oriented, etc.) you should be chosen to receive a travel award.

Post-Meeting Reporting:

Awardees will receive $2000 to be used towards their travel expenses. After the meeting, awardees will submit a final report describing the professional benefits that they gained from attending the meeting, and will contribute to a group article about the meeting and its value to students. This article will be published in multiple venues offered by the partner societies including the PS website and newsletter Priscum, GSA’s newsletter GSA Today, SEPM’s Strata, SVP’s website, and the BSA’s Plant Sciences Bulletin.

DEADLINE: Applications will need to be submitted in PDF format, to the STEPPE office (mail@steppe.org) by May 15, 2014. Students will be notified of the status of their awards by June 15, 2014.
